Interlibrary Loan
Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a network of libraries throughout Iowa and the United States who agree to lend materials to each other. When the Library doesn’t own an item, we can ask other libraries to send it to us so that we can lend it to you. We would ask that you use ILL request(s) for item(s) that have been published for at least one year or for items that wouldn’t be of general interest to other library patrons.
How many items can I request at a time?
You can have up to four active requests at a time (new patrons may request 1 item for the first year). This gives you time to read, listen to, or view the material before it is due back to the lending library.
What can I NOT order through ILL?
We do not borrow materials that we own.
Is there a charge for ILL?
Coon Rapids Public Library does not charge for this service.
How long will it take for my ILL to arrive?
It can take 2-3 weeks for your ILL request to be available for pick-up. If it’s taking longer, we’ll call or e-mail you with an update. We’ll also let you know if we’re unable to borrow the item.
How will I know when to pick up my ILL?
ILL's are just like having an item on reserve. We’ll notify you by phone when the item is ready for you to pick up.
How long can I keep my ILL?
The loaning period for ILL items is generally 4 weeks. This allows you time to read, listen to, or view the item before it is due back to the library so we can make arrangements to send it back to the lending library. We'll include a slip with the item(s) so you are aware when the book is due back to our library so it can be returned on time.
Can I renew my ILL?
Renewal is up to the lending library. Submit your request for renewal five days before the item is due. We’ll ask the lending library and let you know if they’re willing to extend the due date.
What if I do not check out an ILL item that I requested after I submit an ILL request?
Sending materials between libraries costs time and postage. For this reason, we charge the return postage fee if an item is not picked up after it has been requested.
